During the first half term of Autumn the children have been learning all about 'Bears'. We have learnt about different types of bears and used maps and globes to find out where they live. We also looked at fictional bear stories, including 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears', 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear' and 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'. The children have made bears out of playdough, acted out stories in the role-play area, made bears on toast and threaded bears using wool and needles. We also went on a bear hunt around our school and saw a real bear! It was very exciting!
During the second half term of Autumn, we have been learning about different festivals and celebrations and why they are celebrated. We have looked at Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day, Diwali, Weddings and Christmas. We have had a great time learning about all of the different things that happen in these celebrations. The children heard the story of Guy Fawkes and spoke about fire safety. We made firework pictures using glitter and we acted out stories using the small world area. During the week leading up to Remembrance Day, we made poppies out of paper, we painted pictures of poppies and we wrote prayers for soldiers. When we looked at Diwali, we listened to the story of Rama and Sita and told it using small characters. We also had a real wedding and looked at all the different things that are needed to make a wonderful wedding. Finally we learnt about the true meaning behind Christmas. We used soft toys to tell stories, we dressed up as different characters and we made Chrstmas decorations. We have really enjoyed this topic!
During the first spring half term, our topic was 'Castles'. We learnt about different types of castles and the names for all of the parts of a castle. We read lots of different stories including King Arthur, Princess Smartypants and The Kiss that Missed. We used role-play to act out stories - we loved pretending to be knights and princesses! We used playdough to create dragons and we used paint to make pictures of castles, knights and dragons. We also made castles out of clay - it was very tricky as we had to use lots of different tools to make the right shapes on the castle. At the end of our topic, we had a banquet! We listened to medieval music and practised our dancing, we pretended to be jesters and we shared some banquet food. We had a fantastic time!
This half term, we have been learning about the farm. We learnt about the animals that live on a farm, what they liked to eat and where they lived. We matched adult and baby animals together and learnt the names for them too. We spoke about what food we get from farms and some of the children were shocked to learn where we get meat from! We had a farm role-play area with a farm shop, a farm yard and a chick incubator. The children really enjoyed looking after the different animals and learnt how to use money to pay for the different items from the shop. The children also used playdough to create chicks. At the beginning of the term, we learnt about pancake day and spoke about where the ingredients came from. The children enjoyed using the pancake station to make their own pancakes and enjoyed mixng pancake batter outside. The children took a visit to Stockley Farm and loved it! We were able to stroke donkeys, go on a tractor ride and feed lambs and kids!!
This half term, we have been learning about the outdoors. We learnt about the woods and animals that live there, we learnt about plants that grow in the wild and we looked closely at camping and what we might take on a camping trip too. The children particularly loved listening to the 'Owl Babies' story and many of the children really enjoyed retelling the story whilst dressed as owls. We also explored the use of natural objects and used them to create pieces of art and to help with our Numeracy skills. Some of the children had a lot of fun using the natural objects to make owl nests. The children also learnt about different seeds and how to plant them. We all planted a nasturtium seed and watched how they grew. We spent a lot of time in the outdoor area and used the different equipment to explore learning. We especially enjoyed using the drain pipes to make water flow from one area to another.
This half term, we have been learning about the sea. We have learnt about some of the creatures that live in the sea and talked about some of the different habitats that they live in. We talked about what the children like to do at the seaside and created our own senses poems about it. We have read lots of books including 'The Rainbow Fish', 'Dear Greenpeace', Whale Song' and 'Sharing a Shell'. We have also looked at some non-fiction books and learnt facts about the ocean. We have really enjoyed playing in the seaside cafe and shop and spent lots of time serving ice creams and trying on different clothes to buy from the shop. We have also loved using the pirate ship and sea creatures in our small world area to develop our imaginations by making up stories! We have loved using bubblewrap to create our own fish pictures too and have created many wonderful and interesting patterns. We have also been learning about floating and sinking using objects in our water tray.
